Shading is a frequent problem in attic rooms. Of course, it can be easily solved with a roll-up blind, a window film or a venetian blind, but if a classic style curtain is desired in this room also, the case is not easy at all.
The solution in the case of windows on sloped roof is putting on two curtain rods. The upper one has the same function as on a normal window. The lower has the role of holding the fabric of the curtain. The lower has to be placed under the window. Both of them should overhang the two sides of the window, just like in other rooms. In the case of a floor length curtain, the fabric simply should be put behind the lower rod. When it is pushed, the rod will hold the fabric on the sloped roof anyhow. However, in the case of a short curtain, the lower rod has to be put in the fabric, just like the upper one. One or two sided curtains can be made in both cases. Of course, the curtain can be attached to the rod in any ordinary way (rings, fabric flaps, keeper etc.).
In the case of a full width window on a vertical wall, the problem might be the lack of space above the window for the curtain rod, because of the joint of the sloped roof. It is harder if the window itself is not rectangular but follows the line of the roof. It is worth to ask for help of a professional curtain company for a beautiful work. The length of the curtain has to follow the line of the window. Two rods will be needed in this case also, but the fixing is not a free choice because of the skew, since the rings would slip off by the gravitation, for example.
If the window on the vertical part is too small, or not symmetrical in its place, a more spectacular curtain solution can improve the sight. The feeling of a bigger window can be reached by a fabric complementing the furnishing of the room and covering the whole wall, this way the detrimental wall-part can be turned to a focal point. Curtain tassels and wall hooks will be useful.

Misbelieves about interior designers

We almost daily meet opinions about interior designers based on misbelieve. In Hungary, most people still don’t consider this profession to be an honored job. This is why we should clarify the most basic false enunciations.
1. The interior designer wants to implement himself/herself during planning my property
A good interior designer NEVER implements himself/herself during a job, but makes the owner’s dream come true! Because he/she is in the fortunate position that his/her job is his/her hobby as well, he/she doesn’t need more self-justification. It’s a fact that every interior designer has his/her own style after which his/her works are recognizable. This is an advantage for the client, because he/she can choose the designers by their references, which one he/she feels closer the most.
2. Only the rich can afford hiring an interior designer
The price of a whole interior design depends on many parameters, so the offer is always individual. Just like in the case of a tiling or heating job. The starting point can’t be the price of a job done for a neighbor/friend/relative (even many years ago). Asking for an offer is free, we can still take a look among interior designers. Besides, we can ask „only” for an interior design advice which is more cost effective but a much smaller possibility also, but it can help a lot for an amateur.
3. Hiring an interior designer is just a genteel mischief, he/she does indeed nothing for the money
Here are some examples for „nothing”: measuring the property and the requirements, making the plans (building-releasing, lighting, furnishing, custom-made furniture, suspended ceiling, consignation etc.) with discussing it with the client, handling orders, coordinating workers and so on. Say it in a sentence: he/she spares money and time for the client by taking over jobs from the owner as a professional.
4. I exactly know what and how I want, don’t try to force me any other things (color, style, arrangement etc.)
Interior designer forces nothing on anybody. He/she gives advice by the workmanship and experiences. Not only finishing the job is the aim but making the property fit for the expectations of the owner also. He/she can raise many questions which was never thought about by the client or never heard about that possibility. In the case when the owner wants to handle everything from the beginning to the end, but he/she is an amateur, it’s worth to ask for one or two hours of consultation to see if the desired things are really suitable. The owner can spare a lot of money during the renovation with this.
5. The interior designer will suggest me to buy only luxury products which I can’t afford
The interior designer discusses the costs with the owner already at the beginning. He/she will design the future home within the defined budget, fulfilling all the requirements (not unrealistic!) as far as possible. Since he/she knows the market, knows which budget bears what, depending on the features and requirements.
Be confident about interior designers, because they want to make our life better and more comfortable by forming the property according to our needs which we will call home.

Jewellery storage

Storing jewellery usually means putting them in a box/bowl which is hidden in the drawer or just leaving them on the table in a heap. Let’s be more creative and use our jewels as decoration while not wearing them.
Buy a dressing table which has glass top, so the contents of the drawers below are visible. Usually it is divided to sections, there are separate spaces for necklaces, bracelets, rings etc. It remains showy while it is closed and jewels won’t be dusty.
Let’s fix some nice and small hooks on the side of the wardrobe which is an unexploited area. Even more necklaces have place on each of them. If we would like a more striking sight, we can use drawer or door knobs in different sizes and colors instead of the hooks. Similar solution is fixing smaller hooks around an old-fashioned wooden hanger, this way it will be a great necklace holder.
There are ready-made so-called jewellery dolls with curved metal wires in the place of its arms and head. These are suitable for holding almost all kind of jewels. Figures for storing rings are also purchasable (in the shape of a shoe, a sofa, a flower etc.). These are padded and provide separate places for every single ring, this way they don’t contact each other.
Using a three-storied porcelain cake stand is a spectacular solution. The lower and bigger part holds the necklaces, the middle one holds the bracelets and the upper one holds the rings. It’s easy to find one fitting for the style of the room. We can make it by ourselves of wooden cake stands in different sizes.
Foam boards covered by light fabrics and laces put in frames are perfectly suitable for showy storing of earrings. Even a denser chicken wire can be put in frame for this purpose. Clips can be clipped on the edge of the table lamp’s lampshade.
There are several further solutions fitting for a classic style. Ask for help of an interior designer for planning and implementation!

Built-in attic

Building in the attic is one of the best methods for increasing the useful floor space of a house. Such a reconstruction raises not only the value of the property but very comfortable living space can be created with applying some rules.
Pay attention to the quality of insulation because it can largely affect the costs of heating-cooling in the future. Take care of the latter, because these rooms have to be more intensely heated in winter and cooled in summer. The livability of the attic depends on the proper amount of light. If it is possible, more or bigger windows should be built in. If they can be placed only on a high level, let’s choose pieces with handles on their lower part. Since sunshine can be a problem in summer, proper shading should be provided. Mostly roll-up blind or light-reflecting window-foil might be the solution but common curtains shouldn’t be neglected either because of the sloped roof! It can be just as elegant as in an ordinary living room or bedroom, with clever solutions. Attic might be darker in winter than other rooms, so the proper implementing of artificial lighting has to be attended already at the beginning of the works.
A built-in attic can be suited to several functions. In the case of a bedroom, the bed shouldn’t be placed under the skylight because it can disturb the calming rest. If the wardrobe will be here, dehumidifying is a very important task. In the case of children’s room or playroom, safety is a must, especially if there is a balcony also. It’s worth to use additional sound-proofing in the case of a movie or TV room. The proper darkening can be solved here easier. This kind of space can be good for a hobby room or home office also. Take care of placing the desks for avoiding hitting the sloping roof when standing up from the chair. A wider tabletop can be used for this.
