Provence style

Provence style has a continuous popularity since years all over the world. Maybe it captures people with its calming effect.
It contains the essence of French country style. Houses were commonly built of freestone, they became the integral part of nature with their unplastered walls. There are shutters on windows, since the interiors have to be protected from strong sunshine. This makes the heavy curtains unnecessary, commonly only cotton voile curtains are on the windows. Frequently French doors are on the ground floor instead of windows. The patio has an outdoor room function. Since the weather is nicely warm, most of the meals are kept here also. The table is placed in the shadow of a pergola or a bigger tree.
The thick walls protect the house from extreme warming-up. Doors and windows are remained open, this way the cool breeze can blow through the inner rooms also. Walls have light painting. The floor is terracotta or stone paved in the community spaces and bathrooms, there are old wooden floor in the bedrooms. The mood is given by the shabby elegance of wooden furniture and old household objects. It is an important fact, that all of these are original pieces which served generations, so they weren’t made by paint-and-wear technique. They descend in the family or are flee market finds. They can be put on their place after a careful cleaning. Wrought iron accessories and small furniture are common also. These are frequently light colored (off-white, cream, green). The most significant furniture items in the kitchen are the sideboard cabinet, the huge solid wood table and the stone fireplace. Everything was made by hand all over the house from natural local materials. The domination of neutral colors is broken by muted shades (blues, greens, pinks and purples). Nature shows itself in the decoration also. Lavender is the first in the row of flowers, but wildflowers are beloved decorating elements as well.

Real or artificial Christmas tree?

Before every Christmas, there is a question: shall we buy a real or an artificial Christmas tree? Here are some thoughts which might help to decide.
Real pine tree: unlike common misbelieves, forests are not destroyed because of Christmas trees. Hungarian producers deal with breeding of pine trees, dedicated to this purpose. Just like in the case of wheat or carrot. New trees are planted in the place of those that were sold, this way the circulation remains. Since it is grown and transported locally, max. 200-250 kilometers far, its ecological footprint is low. Cut trees thrown out in January are taken away for firewood or chopped. Of course, it decomposes. If there is place for it, potted pine tree could be a good option: it can decorate the garden for many years. There are some markets, to where the trees can be brought back after the holidays.
Artificial pine tree: It is made of PVC, mostly in China. Transportation can be measured in thousands of kilometers, so its ecological footprint is significant. PVC is environmentally harmful, though it is reusable with a large energy expenditure (this happens very rarely). It has no fragrance of course. Its advantage: the question of Christmas tree is solved with one-time payment for years. It is quite durable with proper storage, doesn’t shed its needles and doesn’t need watering. It is always perfectly neat and can be purchased in several colors, sizes and finishes.

Different autumn colors

The typical warm colors of autumn are orange, burgundy red, rust-brown, sunny yellow and the like. Usually these are preferred as decorations. Many people think that these colors don’t fit for their home or their personality and search for another solution instead for autumn decoration. In addition, there are many other possibilities.
Pumpkin is a typical decoration element. There are white, dark green and greyish green species besides the orange and yellow varieties. These colors can be much better fit in an interior where white is the dominating color for example, or the colors of accessories are quite different from the warm palette (turquoise, powder pink, lavender etc.). Pumpkins are easily paintable, this way they can have almost all of the colors in our home.
For natural colored, more rustic interiors, choose a close-to-nature decoration in similar colors not to break the unity. For example, this can be a bouquet of wheatears in a vase, a bunch of brown branches tied with linen band, crops (acorn, walnut, pinecone etc.) in a bowl or balls made of bast.
If crops are in the center of the decoration, we can find fruits and berries of which colors fit more to our home: Granny Smith apple (green), yellowish green pear, Bodinier’s beautyberry (purple), Chinese privet (dark blue berries). Many species of chrysanthemum and asters can be purchased in Hungary, the white flowered of these can be perfectly neutral but impressive decorations.
As the days are more and more short, mood lightings get role again. The warm white light garlands can make any interior cozy. They can be placed for example in a glass vase or among the garlands on the fireplace or they can even frame a mirror. There are many color and shape variations of candles, these can be easily harmonized with the colors of the interior. Their warm lights give the mood.

Parquetry patterns

The history of parquet flooring goes back to the Renaissance. The wooden floor tiles were laid in V-shape since the middle of the 16th century. The two oldest patterns are herringbone and chevron. These are the most popular today also but they are frequently mixed up.
Reputedly herringbone patterned parquetry was first laid by Italian craftsmen in 1539 for the French king Francis I. In this classic pattern, the pieces are in right angle so that the short side of one piece gets to the end of the other’s long side. Actually they show a zigzag pattern but its line is broken.
However, there are pointed peaks in chevron pattern (named after the V-shaped rank sign), this way the chock-shape is created. The pieces are cut in mitter, the ends are joined this way, so the pattern will be continuous. Nowadays ready-made floor and wall tiles are available.
The two patterns mentioned above are frequent not only as floor but as wall decorations also. They can be created from wall tiles (e.g. subway tiles), floor tiles or even vinyl flooring, not only from wood parquetry. They look good both in classic and modern interiors.
Luckily, parquetry is fashionable again, more and more people want to save the old wooden flooring of the building being renovated. It is really worth to spend money and time for it unless it is in too bad condition, since it will be beautiful and valuable part of the interior. It will look as good as new with gap-filling, grinding and lacquering (probably changing its color by burnishing).
