My project 21.

The renovation of this 56 sqm downtown flat for a very nice woman was finished last year. The main tasks were space reorganization and creating enough storage. The old kitchen is now the bedroom for taking advantage of the small back-balcony, so the pantry became a gardrobe. The new kitchen was created by removing the wall between a small room and the entrance space. The old hall’s wall was also removed, this way there was enough space for the dining area and large wardrobes. The central space is much more roomy and livable. The neutral cream and brown colors provide the calm base that is enlivened by different hues of blue, from turquoise to cobalt.

3D visualization

3D visualization has an important role in the design process. The plans of the designer merged with technical plans and product samples are not always comprehensible for the client, who needs something which shows the upshot in a final state, almost in 3D visualization.
Perspective drawing was the first solution for this. The room has been drawn from the perspective of the viewer and looked like if he or she was just standing in it. It could show the relationship of the objects to each other and the scales. It needed handcraft and took a long time. More perspectives meant more drawings.
In the old times, the usual way of this was making scale-models. The miniaturized model of the building was made of paper or wood. This process took a long time also. It was followed by the acceptance of the customer. Since the building constructions themselves were very slow and the furniture was made by craftsmen, realizing a whole interior took many years. Nowadays there is no time for this. In our faster world, technics can help this process also. For example, Rapid Prototyping (RPT) is one of them, which builds the model based on plans generated by software, from several materials, in a relatively short time. This technology is rarely used in interior design.
This process became faster by the emergence and development of CAD software. The „camera” can move freely in the interior designed, so visualization from various aspects took only some more minutes. A new question arose: the quality of the 3D visualizations. The gap between pictures without rendering and photorealistic pictures is huge. All depends on the requirements of the client. Some of them need only a simple visualization to see the harmony of colors and furniture, what can be fit in. But professional visualization is a must in a tender, especially in the case of public buildings.
Most of the architectural and interior design software have a rendering module. However, a perfect result can be achieved only by an external rendering software, which has been developed especially for this purpose. We actually get a realistic picture just like a real photo by setting several parameters. This process is helped by interior manufacturers with providing 3D files of their products which can be imported to the software. This way the chosen lamp, sofa or other product can be exactly placed in the plans, not just a similar one.
Of course, visualizations are still time-consuming process, regardless to the easy-to-use software solutions. Besides, hand drawings still have great importance, because these are unique, having almost an artistic value. Interior designers provide 3D visualizations of the plans if required.

Design documentation

If you are looking for an interior designer on the internet, you will look at numerous websites and references. Most of the cases even the details can be found concerning to the given service for the money: consultation, design documentation, visiting shops, 3D visualization etc. Most of them are obvious. However, the parts of the design documentation (if there is a detailed list at all) mean a little to most people. It can be useful to know these in general.
Floor plan: if there is no official floor plan, the interior designer measures the property and makes a dimensioned floor plan. It contains among others: sizes of rooms, sizes and places of doors and windows, ceiling height, widths of walls, occasional level differences and orientation. The scale is 1:50 (flat) or 1:100 (bigger house).
Demolition-construction plan: these can be on one plan or separated, depending on plans. Commonly two different colors show the changes. The plan contains the demolitions and buildings of walls with dimensions, compared to the original floor plan. The scale is 1:50.
Floor and wall covering plan: in the case of floors it is a color floor plan, in the case of walls it is a sectional view. It contains the type, size, offset and allocation of the covering, size and color of interstice and distance dimensions (if necessary). The scale in the case of floor is 1:50, in the case of wall is 1:20.
Furnishing plan: the complete and color floor plan of the property with furniture. There are no dimensions, probably comments. The scale is 1:50.
Electric plan: it is a plan visualized on the floor plan, which contains the dimensioned places of lamps, sockets, switches and electric outlets (including binding height also). Related furniture is also displayed. The scale is 1:20.
Custom made furniture plan: front and side views (more sides if necessary) of the uniquely made furniture which contain all the dimensions. The material of furniture, details of handles, type of fittings and built-in details can be showed if necessary. The scale is 1:20.
Consignation: it is a detailed list in table of the planned products to be purchased (furniture, tiles, fabrics, decorating objects, lamps etc.). It contains the certain name, size, color, material, amount, picture (if necessary) and manufacturer/reseller of these.
If there is any part in the description or in the offer given by the interior designer, which cannot be understood, do not hesitate to ask for further information. Since one of the bases of the good professional contact is the proper communication.

Heating

One of the essential steps during building or renovation of a property is planning or changing the heating system. Frequently the circumstances are given, for example in the case of an apartment house which has to be adapted. Let’s see a short general review.
Underfloor heating is a popular solution. It is applicable with laminated floor or tiling. Its place has to be formed in the very beginning of the works. Advantages: invisible, releases heat on a large surface and energy saving. Disadvantages: continuous foot-warmth is not healthy for men and it heightens the allergy-inclination to dust.
Radiators are given in the case of house-central heating, gas furnace and central heating, especially in apartment houses. These are placed under the windows in Hungary which makes e.g. the curtaining difficult. Decorative radiator can be bought in classic style which fits well for the general aspect and its color can be chosen from a catalogue. The sight can be more unified with a custom-made radiator cover.
Convector heating can be found in old apartment houses. There is free flame in it, so it cannot be covered. Nowadays the convectors in shops are not only functional but decorative also. Replacing it with an ethanol or electric fireplace can be a solution. Since these are placed under the windows also, the curtaining in this case is a huge problem.
Tile stove is fashionable again, both the wood-burning and gas-burning types. It could be a very special decoration element of the room. It keeps heat for a long time. Disadvantages: it requires a lot of space and its direct surroundings cannot be furnished because of the heat.
Wall-heating is a rarely applied solution. Pipes are placed inside the walls, with warm water circulating in them. Disadvantages: the location of pipes has to be carefully measured before hanging pictures, shelves, mirrors etc.
Heating-cooling air conditioners are powered by electricity. The internal unit can be placed anywhere on the wall from where the outdoor unit can be available with a proper slope. Disadvantages: it’s not economical, dries the air and there is a continuous air-flow.
Of course, there are further solutions or the combinations of the mentioned ones. Ask for help of an interior designer in time for planning the heating.
