Yule log

The origin of Yule Log as a symbol of Christmas is unknown. in the first written record is in the 17th century. Commonly the German folklore is thought to be its cradle. This tradition is popular firstly in Western Europe, in the USA and in Canada.
In old days, this huge hardwood log was carefully selected in the forest. The log was blessed with oil or holy water before the youngest member of the family lit it. Quenching it or lit it again meant misfortune. It had to burn at whole Christmas night to provide light and warmth. Candles were lit with its flame also. The ash of the burnt yule log was gathered and kept because it was believed to keep the devil away and protect the house from stroke of lightning.
However, huge open house stoves have been replaced by much smaller and closed ovens, so the tradition transformed. The smaller logs were decorated and placed on the center of the set table. Instead of burning it, candles were placed on it and lit.
The first yule log cake was made by a Parisian confectioner at the end of the 19th century which spread soon instead of real logs. This roll was filled with butter cream and covered with chocolate or coffee cream and was patterned outside to be similar to a log. It is sprinkled with powdered sugar which reminds us to snow. It is frequently decorated with mushrooms made of marzipan and holly branch. It will be a showy and delicious table centerpiece.

Unusual finials

Decorating the Christmas tree is always a joyful activity. Placing the finial means the end of the job and crowning the tree. Commonly this is a star, an angel or a glass finial. There are of course other solutions complying to the style of the decoration and the colors of the room.
A large, richly tied bow is a good supplemental of the Christmas tree’s ornaments. If its two cords are long enough, they can be even led around the tree. The total effect will be like the tree itself belonged to the gifts waiting for opening.
Winter animal figures could be finials also, e.g. owl, northern cardinal, reindeer, polar bear. Fix it with a wire. Pay attention to its weight, it shouldn’t be too heavy not to pull down the center twig.
The initial of the family name makes the Christmas tree even more intimate. Let’s have the letter cut out of foam, polystyrene or plywood. Decorate it with paint, wrapping paper, ribbons, glitter etc., as we wish. It will be a true family-made surprise.
Let’s decorate a black top-hat with glittering ribbon, holly berry twig or even small globe ornaments. Fix it to the top of the tree, a bit aslope. The tree will remind us to a snowman built in the garden.
Similar to that before, a Santa Claus hat is perfectly suitable also. Sprinkle it with golden glitter after fixing it to the top. If we want to raise the similarity with Santa Claus, place a pair of black boots under the tree, the twigs of the tree should cover the bootlegs.

Poinsettia

Flowers can’t be left out of winter festive decorations also. Poinsettia is the most remarkable for this period. It is placed in a beautiful plant holder or in a pot covered with decorative wrapping paper or fabric. It is rarely considered that this species can be used as cut flower also, which provides much more creative possibilities.
Let’s pin the flowers with longer stem among the branches of topiaries. This looks good indoor as well as outdoor. The bright red color of the flower fits perfectly for the evergreen bush. Wrap it around with a light garland for enjoying it when night falls. A smaller pine tree can be the base also. Put the flower in separated vases on the mantelpiece then group them for the greater effect. In the case of glass vase, pine branches, berries or decor balls can be put in the water. Put pine branches, berried branches and poinsettias around a big candle on a cake stand. It will be a perfect table centerpiece.
Let’s pin a flower fit in color beside the bow of the Christmas present. It will be a decorative surprise under the tree.
Poinsettia flowers look good on the door wreath also. Even the whole base can be covered with them but a single flower as focal point on the top of the door wreath is a good solution also.
Don’t purchase red flowers only, choose pink, white or cream species fitting for your home. Ask for help of an interior designer for the festive decor also.

Advent wreath

The sacral advent wreath is made of pine branches, has a round shape, decorated with four candles, three of them is purple and one is pink. They are to be lit on the four Sundays before Christmas, one more on each Sunday, so on the last Sunday all of them are burning. Nowadays we consider the advent wreath freely, it can have any shape and the colors and numbers of the candles can be also different from the tradition, even the lighting is not important, just the decorating function. Let’s choose an advent wreath for our classic home which is integrated to the Christmas decoration and fits to the colors of the interior.
If we would like to decorate the mantelpiece with it, don’t force the round shape. A multi-tined candle holder can be decorated as an advent wreath. Bind pine branches to its body. Stick berry branches among them and decorate it with ribbons and Christmas ornaments.
We can use a porcelain cake stand instead of a wreath body. If we would like to make it more unique, put four smaller saucers on it and insert the tall candles in them. Make sure it stands stably. Fill the saucers with moss, put holly berry or thuja branches around them. The cake stand and the saucers can be different in color but pay attention to harmony.
An antique silver plate could be a perfect base. Stand thick cylinder candles beside each other. Decorate them with ribbons and evergreens. Sprinkle walnuts, peanuts around them and make it more colorful with some apples or dried slices of orange.
For vintage style, put the candles in small tin buckets or clay pots. Fill them with moss. Put them on a wooden disc and use bark as decoration. It’s simpler and shiny solution if we put the white cylinder candles in jars. Just stand them in a row and number.
