Mercury glass

The so called „silver plated” glass (mercury glass) was very popular in the 19th century, it was developed in Germany at the beginning of the century. It was purchased instead of real silver, because of its silvery shine by those who couldn’t afford the real ones.
In spite of its name, it doesn’t contain any pure silver or mercury. Double layered object was blown of glass and silver nitrate was injected through a small hole between the layers, then the hole was closed. For example, candle holders, doorknobs, jugs, goblets and vases were made this method. They soon became popular in England, France and in the USA also. After a short break, it became fashionable again around 1900 thanks to the Christmas ornaments and faux fruits made of it. Even colored variations appeared in the 20th century.
Collectors are still looking for original pieces. If the air gets in between the two layers, the silvery coating oxidizes and becomes freckled. In order to prevent this, the original seal (lead or wax) on the hole shouldn’t be harmed.
We can make silvered glass replica DIY. Fill a spray with water and vinegar in 1:1. Spray the desired object with „mirror” paint. Let it dry for one or two minutes, then spray the surface with the vinegar mix. Push it around with a paper towel. This not only soaks up the surplus but the desired cracked mirror effect is created this way too. Let it dry completely.
These decorating objects fit very well to the elegant and country classic styles also. In case of uncertainty, ask for help of an interior designer for the decoration.

Heraldry

Heraldry is a historical science of coat-of-arms. The name came from the word „herald”. Heralds’ task was to identify the coats-of-arms of the participants on tournaments.
Age of living heraldry was between the 11th and the 16th century. It means the period when coats-of-arms were used indeed for identification of a person. For example, the dead were identified by the coats-of-arms on their clothes or armor after a battle. The four basic colors of heraldry are blue, green, red and black. Any other colors appeared after this time. Gold was replaced with yellow and silver was replaced with white on portrayals if there was no possibility to use the metal itself.
Parts of the whole coat-of-arms:
– Shield: its shape was different by ages and countries, mostly with a divided field, this was colored and the charge was placed here too
– Supporters: they are commonly animal figures, but human figure may also appear, standing on the two sides of the shield
– Helmet: it symbolizes the chivalric armor, it is above the shield
– Crest: it made the holder recognizable from afar in the battle, so it has a place in the coat-of-arms
– Motto: lettering/slogan is readable on a floating ribbon under the shield, the language is commonly Latin, but French is frequent also
Lion and eagle are the most favorable animal motifs. Fantasy animals (e.g. unicorn) are used just like real ones. Fleur de lis and rose lead the list of floral motifs. Moon, star and sun are common from nature motifs. The crown above the shield is always open. Multi-divided shields were created by fusions of families or the symbol of a new place was put on it after the conquest.
Heraldry is not only about the past. New coats-of-arms are created nowadays also, for example at a noble nomination. Modern shield usages, e.g. sport clubs, are originated in heraldry also.

Thousand faces of classic style

The „classic style” terminology sometimes causes difficulties to the prospective customer, there is a situation when it directly deters him/her from using the service. This definition in public awareness is equal to beige-brown colors, huge and over-decorated furniture or heavy draperies. Classic style however has several faces and all of them can be complemented with any technical solution which provides the comfort of present times.
Historical styles definition means those trends which were specific to a certain historical era, not only in interior design but almost every aspects of life. They contain music, literature, fine arts, architecture, gardening design, fashion etc. They closely linked to each other, just like we can see in historical books. Following these, it’s not necessary to completely copy furnishing of for example a palace, for reaching the desired effect, since the scales probably are quite different now and then. It might be enough to pick two or three main features from the all and the other details should be shaped for these to get a harmonious general aspect. Some examples without limitation: ancient Roman, Renaissance, Baroque, Victorian.
Styles using special features of countries and lands can be also called classic. Commonly they evoke the chosen style with using antique objects, archaic shapes, typical colors and materials, which cannot be reflected by a modern/minimal interior (of course, there are such homes also everywhere). It’s the total effect what really matters. Some examples without limitation: Provencal, Moroccan, (any kind of) rural, seaside style.
Thematic styles, as I call, are interior design solutions which based on a theme. This can be a movie, a city or even a present popular trend. They have in common using classic tracing furniture, accessories and decoration objects, if it is possible, together with antique pieces. Colors help a lot in this case also to reach the goal. Some examples without limitation: shabby chic, steampunk, Paris, industrial style.
Modern classic style cannot be classified to the previously mentioned groups, but probably this is the most common. The bigger furniture, architectural details (mouldings, rosette, wall panel etc.), upholstery, floor coverings are all classic, but colors, accessories, decorating objects represent a more modern trend. These together make the effect sophisticated.
Don’t be afraid of the classic style term. Everybody can find the perfect one of them. Ask for help of an interior designer for implementing.
