Autumn is here again and it’s time for autumn decoration of which pumpkin is the most frequent element. It can be purchased in various shapes, sizes and colors but its disadvantage is getting rotten after a while, so it can’t be stored for the next year. However, pumpkin shaped decoration can be made DIY by using creatively the materials around, this way creating durable and eco-friendly decoration.
Let’s collect the corks of vine bottles. Choose the pieces in the same size and paint them in orange (maybe in other color if it fits better for the interior). Glue them to each other by their long sides as giving round shape front wise. Let’s start with a row of three, then put four on top of it, five on that row, and so on and so on, at last decrease the number of the corks in one row again for getting the round shape. Glue a stem made of branch and string on the top.
Old knitted pullovers in proper colors can be saved from throwing out. Turn it over, cut off the sleeves, sew the holes and the bottom of it. Turn it over again and fill it through the neck hole with wad or spared fabrics for getting a round shape. Sew it tight at the end and stick a fabric covered branch in it as a stem. If leaves are made also, the seam on the top can be covered more easily.
Have a bigger log cut into 2-3 cm thick slices. Paint the cut surfaces in orange. Fix a branch and cirri made of wire on the top of each pieces. Leaning to the wall, it will be a showy pile of pumpkins.
Lids of jars should be holed on their brims in two places, 2 cm from each other. Paint them in the desired color. String them on a thin wire for being them around and twine the ends of the wire. Glue a branch (cinnamon twig is good also), raffia and dried leaves on the top.
The simplest way of making faux pumpkins is buying orange yarn balls in a haberdashery shop in several hues and types. Only a stem and faux-leaves have to be tucked in it and the faux-pumpkin is ready.

Make mass-production furniture unique
People who renew their flat/house or those who furnish a new-built one, cannot always afford uniquely style-made furniture. They have to settle for products bought in big stores, frequently flat-packed. These can be however transformed to unique-like pieces with a little fantasy, which may be ornaments of our home.
One of the simplest solutions is changing the handles of drawers or doors of wardrobes. Two-holed handles are always made according to standards of whole-spacing (64 mm is the shortest). If we don’t like that one on the furniture, let’s buy another which suits more for our taste and just screw it in the place of the old one. We can put a two-whole version instead of a knob, we just have to drill some more holes.
Any kind of furniture-surface can be painted with suitable primers and paints. It needs some preparation: put a cardboard or an old sheet under the furniture which we can throw out later. Mask the parts with masking-tape, which we don’t want to paint. Always paint in a well-ventilated place. Often two coats of paint are required after the primer, then the final protective layer which can be lacquer or wax also.
Help of a professional might be needed in the case of upholstered furniture. The seating of a chair is mostly removable easily from the frame. Even we can reupholster it by our favorite fabric and a suitable stapler. In the case of a sofa or armchair, it’s upon a calculation whether reupholstering is cheaper or buying a unique one is more practical. If the furniture is buttoned, changing the buttons to other color is enough alteration and relatively cheap. It’s easy and wallet friendly to change the standard cushions of the sofa, even to self-made pieces. More ideas here: http://blog.classicinteriors.hu/?p=4541.
Wardrobes can be also altered easily by using leftover wallpapers. We can stick it either inside or on the doors/drawers, the upshot will be spectacular. We can renew the top of a table with the same way – put a glass on it for protection. Decorative fabrics can be placed behind or even instead of the glass panels of doors, which will completely change the mood of the furniture.
If we need more of flat-packed wardrobes, let’s buy them in different colors and put them together reversing their doors or drawers. This results a playful view, especially in children’s room.
Very simple, plain doors can be perked up by moldings, this way the total effect will be more classic. Paint/stain the mitered thin moldings (can be bought in DIY stores in strands) to the desired color and fix them on place by a nailer or a strong glue. It will be more special by gilding or silvering.

Easter decor
Easter wrapping
Bigger Easter chocolate eggs, chocolate bunnies and chicks are put in the traditional Easter basket which can be a table centerpiece after „finding” it, independently the fact that some chocolates are already tasted. Smaller chocolate eggs, dragées, candies can be purchased in less decorative bags which can’t be re-closed after opening. These can be decorations also with some creative ideas.
Choose an Easter patterned fabric. Sew a small sack from a simple rectangular piece which mouth can be narrowed with a sewn ribbon. Just like a gym bag. If there is only a plain fabric, for example a bunny can be drawn on it with a marker or textile paint. The candies should be refilled to it from the plastic bag. It will be easier to handle, and the candy content is an additional surprise.
A threaded glass jar is perfect for this purpose. Paint it with a color suitable to the occasion and cover its lid with fabric. It can be decorated with a cotton wool bunny tail glued to it and card board ears glued on the lid.
Let’s make funnels from thicker orange papers – just simply roll them. The longer part on the top should be folded back as a lid. This part should be pinned and strings made of green crepe paper or yarn can be crossed out the hole and knotted. Glue the lid after filling it. A whole carrot-basket can be made of them in which a chocolate bunny can sit.
A simple brown, folded paper bag could be cut in the middle of the opening side to get a curved V-shape. Knot it just under the cut with a nice ribbon after filling it. Glue a cotton wool tail on one side of it. The bunny-shaped sack is ready.
Draw eyes with a marker on a disposable white plastic cup. Two circlets made of fabric could be glued under them and a pink cotton wool glued between the circlets. Whiskers should be drawn with a marker as the addition to the bunny head. Ears made of card board or felt could be fixed to the edge of the cup. After filling it with sweets, close it with a fitting jar lid, upside down.
